Proces

Made from 100% sheet aluminum, ALU13 reflects the design rules I set for myself. I challenged myself to create a design without introducing any other materials, which meant that hinges, locking mechanisms, and every other component had to be crafted entirely from the sheet aluminum itself.

This limitation led me to a much deeper understanding of the material - what it can do and what it cannot. It’s been a proces filled with trial and error, but I believe this experimentation is the best way to learn, at least for me.

The project began with great ambitions; I wanted it to do everything, which is how most of my ideas start. But through the process, I refined the design down to its core. I found a certain honesty in working with sheet aluminum as it is, using its natural properties to their fullest by understanding the material.

The mechanisms in the stool are quite simple. For instance, I used the natural springback of the aluminum to create a locking mechanism that allows the two sides to slide together easily while preventing them from coming apart. It took a lot of time and many iterations to get it right, but I’m pleased with the result.

One of the defining features is the hinge, formed from a cutout at the seat, which bends around the side. This element has been part of the design for almost the entire lifetime of the stool. I remember discussing it with Henning, the craftsman who helped bring this design to life. He looked at the hinge and said, “Emil, what is this? I’m not sure how we’ll make it - it will probably need to be hand-bent.” And he was right. To attach the top to the sides, we had to bend it by hand, a process that adds a personal touch to every piece.

Practicalities

Here’s a bit about ordering ALU13:V3

Since I’m just kicking off this project, I’ll begin making the stool once you place your order. It’ll take around 30 days from the time you order to when you receive it. I’ll be sure to keep you updated on our progress and any milestones along the way.

For larger orders, or orders outside Denmark, please contact me so we can work out something great together;)
